Standardization in the field of cultural heritage: overview of selected methodological bases

Abstract

Cultural heritage is the unlimited source of knowledge about the past, used for many new research studies, including the interdisciplinary ones. Written documents, old maps, everyday articles and work arts are sources of information about past locations and events, as well as about men and events. Dispersion of cultural heritage objects results in the lack of complete information about processes under investigation. An important issue is development of databases, also spatial ones, which allow to store and present data, as well as to access information about selected objects. Development of geoinformation applications dedicated to cultural heritage requires certain organizational and technological tasks to be performed, such as metadata, data structures and formats, rules for data exchange and integration. The aim of the paper is to discuss the role of the selected methodological bases and standards for movable heritage, as well as the potential of geographic information and ISO 19100 series standards in the heritage standardization process. The authors describe CIDOC CRM ontology and analyze metadata standards for digital copies of movable heritage objects: ObjectID, EAD and Dublin Core.
