Abstract

This paper contains reflections on the role of geolocalized panoramic images in spatial information systems. Development in the field of information leads to appearance of ever new opportunities and ideas for implementation of the visualization of spatial data. One of these trends is the use of panoramic images, which by their very nature, specifically depict actual appearance of the environment and thus constitute a set of valuable information. In this paper, the authors, referring to the existing trends, consider the possibility of extending the range of applications of this technology in the field of GIS and surveying.
The study is focused among others on the problem of presenting panoramic images in a GIS system, because its user interface is usually not adapted to this. The authors proposed their own solution, which is a compromise for convenient presentation of geolocalized panoramas in projects developed with the use of GIS software. The proposed solution is focused on simple way to use data developed both locally and online. An additional aim was to support it as much as possible using open source software, which significantly reduces costs.
Another issue is the use of panoramic images during the establishment and documenting of geodetic control network., Considering that possibility, the authors proposed their own solution based on web technologies.
In addition, the paper attempts to review the applications of modern panoramic photos as a technology that, although known for a long time, is still a source of inspiration in many areas. In this way, the authors try to relate and identify some trends in their domain of interests which is geodesy and GIS systems.
