Abstract

In this paper, the authors describe problems associated with remote sensing of soil moisture using satellite imagery in visible and infrared bands. The area of research is Szczercowska Valley in where Belchatow brown coal mine is located. Research area is particularly interesting in terms of the dynamics of soil moisture changes caused by deep and extensive terrain drainage. This gives the opportunity to compare the results and to achieve potential profit through the integration of results from both methods. Imaging in the visible and infrared bands allows to monitor the condition of vegetation cover, water contained in vegetation and soil moisture. In this paper, the authors decided to use Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index obtained using triangle method based on Landsat 7 ETM+ data. The results are consistent with expectations and confirm rationality of using triangle method in soil moisture changes monitoring and its potential to identify changes in depression cone area in a multi-year period.
